A Minor Feature Request For All Software In The World
August 8, 2025
True story: I was just in class and was trying to copy and paste an image into my notes on a new line, using the handy-dandy CTRL-V shortcut. But since life doesn't always work out how you planned it, I pressed CTRL-C instead. (A common mistake, as C is directly next to V on many keyboards.)
No problem, I thought to myself, I will simply correct my mistake and press CRTL-V properly this time. But I was a fool. I didn't realize I had made the classic beginner's folly.
You see, CTRL-C is also the copy shortcut. And my computer, assuming I actually wanted to press that button, dutifully copied the thing which my cursor was on—namely, nothing. So when I went to press CTRL-V, instead of pasting the thing I copied, it just pasted nothing.
Hey, all software companies? This is stupid. Why would I ever want to copy nothing? Pasting nothing has no effect, so why would I want to do it? I'd kinda get it if I was pasting the newline, but I wasn't—it was literally nothing at all.
Here's a free suggestion for anyone working in tech right now. In the case that the following are all true:
- I have just pressed CTRL-C
- I am on a line in my doc where pressing CTRL-C would copy nothing to my clipboard
- I have intentionally copied something else less than five seconds ago
... then you don't need to copy anything to my keyboard. I'm good, thanks. This deeply serious problem has cost me whole seconds, perhaps even minutes, of my life, which I will never get back. Indeed, it's too late for me. But by acting now, future generations will not have to know this pain.
I do consulting work for $900 an hour, by the way.
